When Marcus Warner was a pastor, two women came to him for help. He walked the first through deliverance and inner healing, and she left fine. The second went through the same process—saw Jesus, had demons manifest and leave—and three days later was worse than before. The difference was maturity. The first woman had a decent capacity to handle life; she just needed some freedom. The second had been tortured as a child and had almost no capacity at all. Healing is easier than maturing. The five engines of emotion

Warner teaches that emotions are driven by five engines, not just one. The first is the body—a two-way street where emotions affect the body and physical states affect emotions. The second is beliefs, also a two-way street: what you believe shapes what you feel, but what you feel also makes it easy to believe thoughts that justify the emotion. Daniel Amen’s “ANTS” (automatic negative thoughts) swarm in when you are already in a state of shame or fear. The third engine is bonding or attachment, and Warner calls this the deepest engine in the brain.
