This small anomaly triggers a cascade of escalating strangeness: every mannequin on the second floor reorients to face him, and he finds a perfect duplicate of the yellow lamp glowing in an empty storefront, with no cord and no explanation.

What follows is a methodical descent into a recursive nightmare. The narrator discovers that if he rides the escalator in a specific loop—marking the handrail, counting steps, acknowledging the extra step—the mall begins to glitch. Each loop adds one more step. The mannequins degrade into grotesque approximations of human anatomy. Stores forget how to be stores, selling only one item, then only misprinted copies of that item.
