Glue It To Them

In the opening minutes of this episode, Dan Bongino draws on a scene from the 1998 comedy Something About Mary to frame his central argument. In the movie, a character pitches a "seven-minute abs" workout video, and another character immediately asks, "Why not six-minute abs?" Bongino uses this as a warning for Republicans: if you try to outbid Democrats by offering slightly less "free stuff" — six-minute abs to the Democrats' seven — they will simply counter with five-minute abs. You cannot win a bidding war you started by ceding the premise. The party must instead do the harder work of telling people difficult truths.

The "Seven-Minute Abs" Trap and the Hard Work of Honesty

Bongino argues that the Republican Party faces a recurring temptation: to become "Democrat-lite" by offering its own version of government giveaways. This is a losing strategy, he insists, because the Democratic Party will always promise more. "You do six minute abs, they'll do five minute abs," he says. The only sustainable path is to reject the premise entirely. "We are not the party of free stuff. We're the party of hard work, ingenuity, pulling yourself up and earning your place in the world."
