The same strategy that made airline and hotel stockholders happy while making customers miserable has now fully arrived in the rental market. The core mechanism is psychological—get you hooked on the headline rent, then hit you with mandatory add-ons you never expected.

These aren't optional upgrades. They're required fees for things that historically were included in rent. Clark lists examples: mandatory internet whether you want it or not, forced pay TV subscriptions even if you only stream, and a $25 monthly "trash pickup" fee that his own daughter had to pay on top of rent. The most eyebrow-raising new entry in this category: a fee for working from home. If the landlord knows or assumes you spend too much time at your apartment, they charge extra. Clark calls this "news of the weird" but notes it's spreading beyond Los Angeles, where he first spotted it.
