The Last Supper and Gethsemane: What Jesus Knew About Failure

Jesus told eleven men who had left everything to follow him that one of them would betray him that very night. Their response was not to point fingers at Judas. Instead, each one asked, "Is it I, Lord?" That moment captures the central tension of this sermon: the difference between knowing Jesus as a teacher and surrendering to him as Lord—and what happens when people who claim to follow him discover they cannot keep their promises.

The Lord's Supper as the Center of History

The Passover meal that Jesus transformed into what Christians call the Lord's Supper was already the most significant holiday in Jewish life—the annual remembrance of the angel of death passing over homes marked with the blood of a lamb. Jesus took that centuries-old tradition and claimed it had always been about him. "The blood of the lamb on the doorpost of the house so the angel of death passes over—that's going to happen tomorrow," the preacher explains. "I am the lamb that will be slain."

Show Notes

In Matthew 26, Jesus moves closer to the cross, showing us what true surrender, obedience and faithfulness look like. From the Last Supper to the Garden of Gethsemane, we see that following Jesus is not about relying on our own strength, but trusting Him even when obedience is difficult.

Through the failures of Judas, Peter and the disciples, we are reminded that our worst moments do not have the final word. Jesus remains faithful even when we fall short. As He prays, “Not as I will, but as You will,” Jesus shows us what it means to fully surrender to the Father and faithfully walk toward the cross.
