In Matthew 22, Jesus’ adversaries—Pharisees, Sadducees, Herodians, and scribes—keep coming at him with trap questions designed to make him look foolish or get him killed. But Jesus doesn’t play their game. He doesn’t negotiate. He takes over. The central claim of this sermon is that religion is a negotiation with God (“if I do this, then God will do that”), while Jesus’ invitation is total surrender. The trap about taxes: whose image is on you?

The Pharisees and Herodians ask Jesus whether it is lawful to pay taxes to Caesar. It is a double bind: say yes and the Jewish crowds will see him as a Roman collaborator; say no and the Romans will treat him as a rebel. Jesus asks for a coin, points to Caesar’s image on it, and says, “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” The key word is render—it means to give back what is rightfully owed. Caesar’s image is on the coin, so give it back to him. But whose image is on you? Genesis says humans are made in the image of God.
