Forgiveness: A Debt Fully Paid

In Matthew 18, Peter asks Jesus a question that sounds reasonable: "Lord, how often will my brother sin against me and I forgive him? As many as seven times?" Jesus answers with a number that isn't really a number—seventy-seven times, or seventy times seven—and then tells a parable that redefines what forgiveness even is. The sermon works through this passage by first making the listener sit with an uncomfortable reality: the person who has wronged you, the unresolved situation still humming in the background. Then it walks through what sin actually is, what forgiveness actually costs, and why the whole thing only makes sense in light of Jesus.

Sin as an unpayable debt

The parable describes sin not as a mistake or a misstep but as a debt—and a staggering one. The servant owes the king 10,000 talents. In today's terms, that is roughly $10 billion, or 200,000 years of labor at $50,000 a year. The point is not the number but the impossibility. Even if you could quantify what you owe—the worship you stole from God, the truth you withheld from a neighbor, the trust you broke, the safety you violated—you cannot repay it. You do not have the resources. The wages of sin is death, and that is the only currency that even approaches the scale of the debt.
