The 2026 Finals Turned on a Single Press Conference

Doc Rivers, who played for both the Knicks and Spurs during his career, found himself torn watching the 2026 NBA Finals. But by the end, he just wanted more basketball. His son Spencer, a Spurs fan who grew up in San Antonio, felt the opposite: "I can't take them doing the same thing every game. Getting out to a lead. Losing the lead. Here comes Brunson."

The series changed after Game 3, when San Antonio won and Mike Brown walked into the media room to complain about fouls. Rivers thinks it was a brilliant move—whether intentional or not. From that point forward, the whistles shifted. In Game 5, Brunson shot 18 free throws. More critically, Stephon Castle picked up his fourth foul right before the second quarter, forcing him to sit as Brunson got cooking. Castle picked up his fourth two minutes into the third quarter, then his fifth soon after. Brunson's entire 29-point scoring stretch happened without Castle on the floor. The rookie never recovered. "You could see he was worried about it," Rivers says. "He was thinking about it." Castle's last two drives of the series—drives he hadn't attempted all postseason—came because the Spurs were suddenly afraid to foul him.
