Day 234 (Jeremiah 46-48) - Year 8

Tara Lee Cobbell opens with a striking image: God is talking directly to nations that don't worship him. In Jeremiah 46-48, the prophecies aren't just for Israel. They are for Egypt, Philistia, and Moab — longtime enemies. And the reason matters more than the judgment itself.

Two oracles against Egypt

Egypt gets two separate oracles in Chapter 46. At first, they look powerful. But God says their strength is an illusion. Their towns will fall, their soldiers will flee, and their leader Pharaoh will be rendered powerless. Verse 17 calls him "all bark and no bite." God tells the Egyptians to pack their bags because exile is coming from the north. Even their impenetrable forest will be chopped down — nothing can withstand God's command.

Then God turns to the Israelites who disobeyed him and fled to Egypt. He is gentler with them than before. The most common reason Scripture gives for God's people not to be afraid is that his presence is with them no matter what. Cobbell puts it plainly: "If we can remember who God is and how much he loves us, then the awareness of his nearness is the antidote to fear." God promises protection and deliverance alongside discipline and punishment. All four are evidence of his love, because they are what every loving father provides.
