Day 230 (Jeremiah 38-40, Psalm 74, 79) - Year 8

In 586 B.C., Jerusalem fell to Babylon after a year and a half under siege, exactly as the prophet Jeremiah had been warning for decades. But even before that collapse, the city's own officials threw Jeremiah into a cistern to die—a pit about 20 feet deep with smooth plaster walls, designed to be inescapable. He sank into the muddy bottom, stuck and alone, until an unlikely rescuer stepped in: an Ethiopian eunuch named Ebed-Melech, the only person brave enough to act on Jeremiah's behalf.

The episode tracks two parallel stories of deliverance. Jeremiah is pulled from the cistern using old bed sheets in reverse, a rescue orchestrated by God through a foreigner. Later, when Babylon conquers Jerusalem, King Nebuchadnezzar treats Jeremiah well because his prophecies had urged surrender to Babylon—meaning the prophet received better treatment from his nation's enemies than from his own king. Meanwhile, God promises to spare Ebed-Melech because he demonstrated faith, marking another instance where an outsider is welcomed into God's family while insiders face judgment.
