The king of Judah, Jehoiakim, sits by a winter fire and slices a scroll into pieces, feeding it to the flames one column at a time. The scroll contains twenty-two years of prophetic warnings from Jeremiah, painstakingly dictated to the scribe Baruch. The king’s act is not just vandalism; in the ancient Near East, many believed that words had the power to make things happen. By destroying the scroll, Jehoiakim is trying to unmake the prophecy itself. It does not work.

Obedience from an Unexpected Quarter

The episode opens with a deliberate contrast. Just after reading about Judah’s unfaithfulness, the narrative introduces the Rechabites, a nomadic clan descended from the Kenites. They are not Israelites by birth, but they have lived alongside Israel for generations and some follow Yahweh. Two centuries earlier, an ancestor commanded them to live simply—no houses, no farming, no wine. They have kept that command without deviation. God instructs Jeremiah to bring them to the temple and offer them wine. They refuse, citing their ancestor’s rule.
