Day 228 (Jeremiah 32-34) - Year 8

In prison, the prophet Jeremiah buys a field. The transaction is not a financial hedge or a desperate grasp at normalcy—it is an act of faith, carried out while Babylonian armies already occupy the land he just paid for. Jeremiah’s cousin shows up with a deed, Jeremiah follows through, and he instructs his scribe Baruch to seal the paperwork in a clay jar because it will be seven years before anyone needs it again. The purchase is a bet on God’s promise that the people will return from exile and live on the land once more. But even as he acts boldly, Jeremiah takes his doubts directly to God: I know nothing is too hard for you. But the Babylonians are already here. God’s reply is patient but firm: Behold, I am the Lord, the God of all flesh. Is anything too hard for me?

The problem with the rich

Jeremiah’s willingness to spend money while in prison raises an obvious question: is he a hypocrite? He has spent much of his prophetic career condemning the wealthy. But the problem, says Tara Lee Cobble, is not wealth itself. “Being wealthy isn’t a sin,” she notes. The sin is oppression—using money and power to exploit others, to keep them in debt and in chains. Jeremiah’s own money is not tainted by that pattern. He buys the field not to get richer but to demonstrate that he believes God will restore his people. It is a public, costly act of trust.
