Day 222 (Jeremiah 10-13) - Year 8

The people of Judah are dressing blocks of wood in gold and taking them on trips. They have made special outfits for statues that cannot hear, speak, or move. Tara Lee Cobble opens the episode by pointing out the absurdity: "It's a tree God made, cut down by a human, covered in gold God made." The idol is completely impotent unless an evil spirit attaches itself to the object—which is precisely what the people are hoping for, though they frame it as seeking forces of power rather than evil spirits.

The Real Idolatry Problem

The episode's central argument is that idolatry is not primarily about wooden statues. Most listeners do not have a false god set up in their homes, but they do look to other things besides Yahweh for safety, power, and happiness. Cobble draws the line clearly: "There's nothing wrong with those things. But when they take precedence in our hearts and thoughts, they take our eyes off Yahweh. When our good desires become ultimate, when they become expectations and requirements, we are on the same path as the people of Judah."
