Day 221 (Jeremiah 7-9) - Year 8

“Everyone turns to his own course.” That line from Jeremiah 8:6 is the hinge of today’s reading, and Tara Lee Cobble, host of The Bible Recap, uses it to frame the central problem in Jeremiah 7–9: the people of Judah have turned the temple itself into an idol, trusting in a religious object rather than the God it represents, and God is about to let them face the consequences.

The Temple as a Talisman

The episode opens with Jeremiah standing at the gate of the temple in Jerusalem, delivering what is known as his “temple sermon.” The people have come to worship, but they are living double lives—sacrificing to idols and false gods outside the temple walls, as though God cannot see through walls or is confined to the building. Cobble highlights verse 4, where the people repeat a phrase “like an incantation”: “The temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord.” They have turned temple worship into worship of the temple itself. The underlying assumption, she explains, is that because the temple was in the southern kingdom of Judah, they were protected from the Assyrian invasion that destroyed the northern kingdom of Israel. They treated the building as a protective icon, not as the dwelling place of a God who demands obedience.
