Day 178: Called Back (2026)

"Your sons of the fourth generation shall sit on the throne of Israel." That is God's promise to Jehu in 2 Kings 10—a reward for wiping out the house of Ahab and the worship of Baal. Yet the very next verse adds, "But Jehu was not careful to walk in the law of the Lord the God of Israel with all his heart." He went halfway, and that halfheartedness defines the entire episode.

The Half-Hearted Reformer

Jehu is a complex and unsettling figure. He eliminates Ahab's seventy sons by tricking the elders of Samaria into beheading them and piling their heads at the city gate. He then deceives all the prophets and worshippers of Baal into gathering for a "great sacrifice," only to slaughter them and turn Baal's temple into a latrine. God credits this zeal: Jehu's dynasty will last four generations, an unusually long stretch for the northern kingdom.

But Jehu never removes the golden calves at Bethel and Dan that Jeroboam had set up. He destroys false worship without restoring true worship. The place of worship, as any reader of Scripture would know, is Jerusalem—not the northern shrines. Jehu knows this, yet he keeps the calves for political convenience. He is not numbered among the good kings because he is only half-hearted. The lesson is blunt: doing some good while refusing to do the full good is not enough.
