Echo Weaver Is Like Outer Wilds in 2D

The hosts of The Besties spent a recent episode wrestling with how to describe Echo Weaver, a game that one of them initially called "a search action information game" before immediately admitting that sounded like "the dullest fucking shit imaginable." The better comparison, they settled on, is Outer Wilds in 2D — a time-looping Metroidvania where the player already has every ability from the start but has to discover what those abilities are and how to use them. One host finished the game, then erased his save and started over just to confirm that you can beat the entire thing on the first cycle if you already know everything. That claim turned out to be true.

The Core Mechanism: Knowledge as Progression

The game drops you into a garbage pit labeled "Cycle One" with no explanation of controls, a one-minute time limit, and a world full of locked doors and impassable gaps. As you explore and die repeatedly, you find crystals that extend your time, audio logs that teach you hidden mechanics, and shortcuts that make subsequent runs faster. The key insight is that nothing is gated by items — you have your weapon (a glaive that works like a frisbee) from the beginning. What you lack is information.

Show Notes

Even though we were traveling for the live show, we still made time to play new games! Echo Weaver is a Metroidvania in the style of Outer Wilds, but simplified from 3D to 2D. It’s a little rough around the edges, though not enough to tarnish its big ideas. Plus, Griffin joins Plante on the Dragon’s Dogma train with the updated Dragon Dogma’s 2: Dark Arisen. But have some of those changes led Plante to reconsider his fandom? So many mysteries! To get the answers, I suppose you’ll just have to listen!
