“Reddit vs AI” — The Interview with Steve Huffman

Reddit CEO Steve Huffman learned something unexpected from ballroom dancing with his sister in college: “Until I’ve exhausted everything I can do or every way I can be better, I shouldn’t be complaining about somebody else. Because even though it may not be obvious, I’m probably the problem.” That lesson about taking responsibility before blaming teammates has shaped how he runs a $20 billion company. Huffman sat down with the hosts of The Best One Yet to discuss Reddit’s founding, its accidental innovations, and how the platform is navigating the AI era.

The Accidental Invention of Upvotes and Downvotes

Reddit launched in 2005 as a blend of two ideas: the user-powered link sharing of Delicious and the community conversation of Slashdot. But early on, the site had a problem — not enough people were submitting links. The founders needed a way to rank content, so they experimented with words like “interesting/uninteresting” and “cool/uncool.” Neither worked. “There could be a news story about a natural disaster that you’d want to be popular on Reddit,” Huffman explained. “But you don’t want to click that and say ‘cool’ — a bunch of people just got killed in a hurricane.”

Show Notes

Reddit… it’s the most important company in social media right now, because it’s the most different. It’s the 5th most visited website in America, the internet’s front page, and the most valuable source of content to train artificial intelligence (Sam Altman pays *them*). They’ve got a partnership with OpenAI… yet the content is anti-AI. And co-founder / CEO Steve Huffman runs the most real company in tech right now… and he's a classically-trained ballroom dancer.
