He points out that every champion in his adult life gets the dynasty buzz, and the vast majority do not deliver. The NBA has seen eight different champions in eight years—an unprecedented stretch of parity. Maller argues this is by design: owners, frustrated by super teams, made rules that make it harder to keep a core together for more than a year or two. "Dynasties have simply not been able to grow in the current climate under the rules of the NBA," he says. The Knicks' run, he insists, was "a comet," not the start of a dynasty.
