The World Cup has barely started, and already the U.S. men's national team coach is complaining about mandatory hydration breaks, FIFA is sitting on 180,000 unsold tickets, and the whole operation smells like a revenue grab dressed up as player safety. Ben Maller devotes a full hour to unpacking the cynicism, arguing that the governing body has engineered a system where every new rule conveniently creates a new ad slot.

Mauricio Pochettino, the U.S. men's national team coach, threw a haymaker at FIFA's mandatory hydration break rule before the tournament even settled in. The forced pause in each half, he argued, changes the rhythm of the match and disrupts the flow of the game. Maller is buying what Pochettino is selling, and he is emphatic that this is not about player welfare. "Pochettino is not anti-water or anti-safety," Maller says. "He's all about common sense.
