A six-hour drive into thickening forest, arriving in darkness to a house that felt already too familiar—and too wrong. The narrator had come to a small lumber town for a fresh start, crashing with his mother’s old college friend Joan. The house smelled like lavender and coffee. There was a border collie named Cosmo. On the fridge, photos of Joan and her grown son. A guest bedroom with a large mirror facing the bed. Everything ordinary. But Joan had something to tell him before he could sleep.

“There is a thing here we have no name for,” she said. “Some people call it a mimic or an echo. The children call it the copycat.” She described an entity that came from the forest, evolved over thousands of years, and could imitate anything physical—trees, lamp posts, animals, people. It was not folklore she was sharing but local protocol. The town had rules, and everyone who lived there knew them.

First, never bring the mimic inside your home. That meant ignoring roadside furniture, stray animals, or unexpected visitors asking for water—anything that could give the thing access. Once inside, it could pretend to be any object or person in the house.
