The gap between average and advanced AI users has exploded from 2.6x in January to 8.3x by the end of June, according to newly released OpenAI research. The reason, as OpenAI puts it, is that the most advanced firms are moving "from assistance to delegation" — handing agents the context and tools to complete complex tasks rather than just asking chatbots questions. And the fastest growth in agentic use is coming from the least expected places: legal departments, sales teams, and recruiting functions, not software engineers.

The Agentic Tipping Point

OpenAI tracked the balance between ChatGPT usage and agentic usage by measuring enterprise output tokens — a proxy for the volume of work being done. A year ago, essentially 100% of enterprise output tokens came from standard chat interactions. By February 2025, when the Codex app launched for Mac OS, the split was 87% chat to 13% agentic. Then the shift accelerated dramatically. By late April, agentic output tokens had flipped to 53%. By June, agents represented 64% of all enterprise output tokens.
