The Chinese lab Moonshot released Kimi K3 on Thursday, a 2.8 trillion parameter open-weights model that immediately set off a familiar cycle: breathless claims that China had caught up to frontier Western models, followed by a more sober second look. The model scored 57 on Artificial Analysis's intelligence index, placing it third behind Anthropic's Fable 5 and OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Sol, but ahead of Opus 4.8. On coding benchmark DeepSui, K3 scored 67.5—8.5 points ahead of Opus 4.8 and a half point ahead of GPT-5.5, though 2.5 points behind Fable 5 and 5.5 behind GPT-5.6 Sol. On Terminal Bench 2.1, it scored 88.3, just half a point behind GPT-5.6. These numbers make K3 the strongest open model ever measured on Artificial Analysis's benchmarks, six points ahead of the previous leader, Z.AI's GLM 5.2.
