Google's Gemini 4 Argon, Claude Sonnet 5.5, and the Shifting Shape of the AI Race

This week, the company announced Gemini 4 Argon, its first frontier model in over six months. By the benchmarks, Google appears to be back. But whether that translates into real-world relevance depends on factors that go far beyond benchmark scores.

Gemini 4 Argon: Strong Benchmarks, Limited Access

Google unveiled Gemini 4 Argon on Wednesday, though the model is not yet generally available. DeepMind CEO Koray Kavukcuoglu said the model delivers "frontier performance in complex workflows across real-world software engineering, enterprise knowledge work like legal and finance, and cybersecurity defense." On the Val's index for agentic knowledge work, Gemini 4 scored 68.9%, beating Fable 5.1, GPT-6 Astra, and exceeding current leader Opus 5.5 by a couple of percentage points. On Harvey's legal agent benchmark, Gemini 4 more than tripled the score of the previous leader.
