CEO-Led AI Gets 3X the ROI

OpenAI unveiled its first custom-designed chip, Micron delivered blowout earnings that reversed a week of market jitters, and Anthropic accused Alibaba of running the largest model distillation attack ever detected. Meanwhile, a new KPMG survey of 1.4 million workplace AI interactions found that organizations where the CEO actively owns AI strategy report three times as much ROI. OpenAI's First In-House Chip and the Compute Arms Race

OpenAI announced its first custom-designed chip, codenamed Jalapeño, produced in collaboration with Broadcom. The chip is an ASIC—similar to Google's TPUs—designed specifically for serving inference on large language models, unlike NVIDIA's more general-purpose GPUs. OpenAI president Greg Brockman said the chip is "part of our long-term full-stack infrastructure strategy to make compute more abundant."

The development cycle was unusually fast: from initial design to manufacturing tape-out in nine months, which OpenAI believes is the fastest ever for a high-performance ASIC. Brockman credited AI-enhanced design, noting "the degree to which our models have been able to accelerate it was very surprising to us."
