For decades, Karin Austin has lived at the intersection of the UFO phenomenon and the human experience of it. The Distinction Between "Abductee" and "Experiencer"

Austin is careful with language. She explains that within John Mack's community, the term "experiencer" evolved naturally because "abduction" or "abductee" never felt complete. The initial terror of an encounter—the paralysis, the intruders in the bedroom, the neurochemical flood—was real, but it was not the whole story. For her and others, the interactions included lessons about how the universe works, telepathic exchanges, and exposure to environments that felt both physical and non-physical. The word "abductee" captured the fear but missed the complexity.
