The Peaceful Revolution: Bitcoin Veterans and the Fight for Sound Money

The Bitcoin Veterans community started as nothing more than a Twitter group chat — a handful of former service members who realized there was no organized network for veterans in the Bitcoin space. What emerged from that chat is now a decentralized, self-organizing force that raised over one full Bitcoin for Hurricane Helene relief, deployed off-grid mesh radios in the mountains of North Carolina, and has grown into a nationwide network of regional Signal chats, topical discussion groups, and an annual summit at Bitcoin Park in Nashville. The whole thing runs on two rules: no violence and no shitcoins.

From the Military to Bitcoin

"Average Gary" — the pseudonymous Navy veteran and Bitcoin mining engineer who tells this story — enlisted at eighteen in 2008, shipping off to boot camp just as the financial system was melting down. He was oblivious to the crash at the time, but in hindsight, he noticed something: older men, second-career types, were joining the military in unusual numbers. "These guys just got their asses handed to them because of the crash and needed something to go do," he recalls. "The military is a fantastic — if you're looking for something, the military is always there."
