AI Summary
5 min readRevenge of the Blue Collars
Economist Peter St. Onge sees something unfolding that most people miss: the same AI boom that is about to gut white-collar generalists is simultaneously creating a blue-collar renaissance. The construction, maintenance, and infrastructure work required to build out AI data centers is already driving the strongest blue-collar wage growth in sixty years. PricewaterhouseCoopers estimates 4.7 million construction jobs from AI data centers alone, with one in five permanent. Meanwhile, freshly minted psychology and economics graduates with no concrete skills are about to get "absolutely savage," as St. Onge puts it — their cubicle jobs are the ones AI replaces first.
The AI Bubble: Real Technology, Real Profits, Real Mania
St. Onge cuts his teeth on the dot-com bubble — he bought Yahoo at $60 in 1996, retired at 25, then lost it all when the crash came. He brings that experience to reading AI stocks today. Yes, Nvidia, Broadcom, and Marvel have gone up enormous amounts. Yes, that is bubble behavior. But there are two critical differences from 1999.
First, valuations are far lower. Dot-com companies had no profits — internet stocks as a group earned not a single dollar in the 1990s. Nvidia's P/E ratio today is around 30, not a thousand. These companies are "minting profits, profits you put in your pocket," not selling eyeballs and vapor.

What you'll learn
- 1 (00:07) **Opening Thesis: Bitcoin vs. The Hype Cycle** - The host and guest argue that Bitcoin's fundamentals are unchanged despite a "crab walk" price, as AI is currently the dominant "number go up" story sucking speculative oxygen from the room.
- 2 (06:00) **Diagnosing the AI Bubble: Dot-Com 2.0?** - Peter St. Onge argues AI is a "bubble" in price behavior, but fundamentally different and healthier than the dot-com era.
- 3 (11:03) **The Technology Itself: "10X the Internet"** - St. Onge states the underlying AI technology is a once-in-a-lifetime leap, far more impactful than the internet.
- 4 (16:54) **Why AI Demand is "Unlimited"** - The conversation contrasts AI's infrastructure buildout with the dot-com "dark fiber" problem.
- 5 (22:52) **The Political Risk: Government Capture of AI** - The discussion turns to the danger of the Trump administration's "quasi-nationalization" of AI infrastructure.
- 6 (31:30) **Kevin Warsh & The Fed's "Robin Hood" Policy** - An analysis of the new Fed chair's likely strategy for managing inflation and re-industrialization.
- 7 (43:29) **The Great Reversal: AI's Impact on Wages** - The core thesis of the episode: AI will gut white-collar generalists while creating a "blue collar renaissance."

Marty sits down with economist Peter St. Onge to discuss the AI bubble's remaining runway of real earnings, the coming renaissance for blue collar workers alongside the gutting of generalist cubicle workers, and why Kevin Warsh should fight inflation by unloading the Fed's balance sheet instead of hiking rates.
