Why Following Jesus Won't Always Be Easy

The episode opens with a vivid scene: four people sitting around a table in a bed and breakfast, studying a map before a week-long mountain run. They had trained at 250 feet above sea level, but now they were on another continent at elevation, and the reality of what they had signed up for was just beginning to sink in. Their guide, Muty, was unfazed—the trails were like his backyard. He folded the map into his running vest, packed crackers and a water filter, and assured them he would bring up the rear. "It will be hard on the way up, but I've got you," he said. "Doing hard things brings people together."

The Honest Map Jesus Lays Out

In John 15, Jesus is not giving a farewell speech full of warm assurances that everything will go smoothly. The host, Tinya Wilmuth, points out that if Jesus were laying out a map on a table, the disciples would have been worried about what to pack for the journey. Jesus says plainly: "If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you." He tells them, "They will do all these things to you on account of my name." And he adds, "The one who hates me also hates my Father."
