AI Summary
5 min readThe Jev Phenomenon: Fast, Cheap Classification That Isn't an LLM
The most interesting AI release in recent weeks isn't another massive language model trying to be smarter than the competition. It's Jev—a model from Type CI that doesn't generate text at all. It only answers questions: yes/no, pick one from a list, or rate on a scale. That's it. And that limitation is exactly what makes it useful, because it returns answers in 150-200 milliseconds for roughly a dollar to process 80 hours of video transcripts. The hype around Jev is substantial, but it's worth understanding what it actually does, what it doesn't do, and why the excitement might be justified.
How Jev Works (and Doesn't Work)
Jev was released by Diogo Almeida, formerly of ChatGPT and a co-inventor of reinforcement learning through human feedback. The headline difference from standard LLMs: Jev doesn't generate text. It classifies. You give it a prompt and a set of possible answers, and it picks one. The supported question types are null (yes/no), choice (pick one from options you provide), and score (rating on a scale).
