Stages of Fire's Adoption

Early interactions with fire likely began with foraging, where hominins like Australopithecus around 4 million years ago encountered wildfires from lightning strikes and noticed benefits such as cooked meat tasting better and easier to eat. This phase left no clear archaeological trace, inferred from animal behaviors like predators exploiting post-fire hunting grounds or birds spreading embers.

Gathering followed around 1 million years ago, with evidence of controlled use in protected spots like caves, far from natural wildfire sources. Hominins carried embers—perhaps in hollow logs, branches, or slow-burning animal dung—to flush prey, deter predators like saber-toothed tigers, or provide protection, mimicking animals' instincts but extending fire's utility.

Fire-making emerged later, between 1 million and 400,000 years ago, marking a shift from dependence on natural sources to self-sufficiency. This capability, widespread by 400,000 years ago, enabled hearths—repeated fire pits for cooking, warmth, or crafting—distinguishing intentional human activity.
