What Rope Is and How It Works

Rope is a specific type of cordage—any bundled fiber braided or twisted together. A cord is rope three-sixteenths of an inch or less in diameter; anything thicker is simply called rope. A cable is several ropes twisted together. The fundamental insight behind rope is that individual fibers are weak, but when twisted together in opposing directions under tension, they become strong and stable. This is done by storing energy in the twist, so the rope holds its shape even when pulled, knotted, and moved.
