"I just started building it out as an experiment"

The guest on this episode of Starter Story was stuck. He had tried multiple online business models—creator-led services, products for creators—and none of them generated enough income to escape his 9-to-5. One day, frustrated that nothing had worked, he had an idea for a database he would use himself. He figured that if enough other people wanted it, he could turn it into a full SaaS product using AI. He treated it as an experiment. It did pretty good.

That is the entire origin story. No grand vision, no market research, no funding round. Just a person who built something he needed and let the market decide.

The experiment-first approach

The guest's operating principle is straightforward: build what you personally need, launch it quickly as a test, and scale only if demand materializes. He did not wait for certainty. He did not over-engineer. He did not spend months validating the idea with surveys or focus groups. He built a minimum viable version of a database he wanted for himself, used AI to make it more capable, and put it in front of people.
