A simple website that makes $40K a month, run by one person

Angus Chang built a website that does exactly one thing: convert bank statement PDFs into spreadsheets. He launched it in 2021, and today it generates $40,000 a month in revenue. He runs the entire operation alone — no employees, no co-founder, no outside funding. The business now has about 1,000 paying customers out of 75,000 total users, with roughly 40,000 monthly visitors. The growth curve was slow: $6,000 MRR in 2022, $14,000 in 2023, $27,000 in 2024, and the current $40,000.

The idea came from a personal need, not market research

Chang quit his job and wanted to understand his personal finances. He needed multiple years of bank transaction data in a single spreadsheet to calculate his monthly spending and runway. His bank only offered PDF statements, and extracting data from them manually was painful. So he wrote code to do it for himself.

He recognized this as a potential business problem because the technical challenge was real. Bank statement PDFs are not standardized — different banks format them differently, and the data is often embedded as images or irregular tables. "I wrote some code to get the transaction data out of the bank statements. And that was also really hard. So I figured it must be a real problem."
