I Built A $1M App In 5 Hours | Starter Story

In 2016, Dawson was a software engineer at Uber, pre-IPO, in what looked like the hottest place in tech. But inside, he saw ineffective teams and felt disillusioned with large corporations. He quit, traveled the world for a year, and felt scared stepping out of that comfort zone. During that year in Australia, he met people distributing financial aid through Ethereum — a niche, out-of-this-world encounter that pulled him back into software. When he returned to the US, he started competing in hackathons. During a one-month-long crypto hackathon, he waited until the last two or three weeks, letting the idea bounce around in his brain until he had full conviction. Then he built the entire app — start to finish — in four or five hours.

The Anti-Email Strategy and Monetization

The app, called Earnify, was simple: users entered their Ethereum address and instantly saw unclaimed airdrops (free money, essentially coupons from crypto projects). The average user found $750. Dawson launched by shipping the website and publishing a single, intentionally crafted tweet with a video showing an address with a ton of airdrops. It went viral. Within 48 hours, he had 10,000 organic sign-ups.
