From Dorm Room to $10 Million: Karthic's Multi-Brand Apparel Playbook

Karthic started with $500 and a fraternity brother in a college common room, texting friends to find out who was buying t-shirts for campus events. A decade later, he runs four e-commerce brands that collectively generate $10 million in revenue—all built while holding down a full-time job at Amazon and later Salesforce, working from 8 a.m. until midnight, six days a week, for over two years.

The Niche Strategy That Built Four Brands

Rather than launching a general apparel company, Karthic and his co-founder Luke went deep into one narrow market: custom merchandise for fraternities and sororities. That first brand, Greek House, served a specific, recurring need on campus. "Custom is the keyword," Karthic says. "We went after one niche market."

Serving Greek organizations led naturally into serving other campus departments and organizations. That became College Thread. Then came Threadly, extending the same custom apparel model to businesses and nonprofits. The most recent brand, Athletes Thread, emerged from a regulatory shift: the 2021 NCAA name, image, and likeness (NIL) ruling, which allowed student athletes to monetize their personal brands. Karthic saw an opportunity to make merchandise co-branded with both the college and the individual athlete.
