He Built a Million-Dollar App in Five Hours — Then Walked Away

Dawson Botsford built a crypto portfolio tracking app in a single afternoon during a hackathon. "I basically went start to finish, I think four or five hours total," he says. He shipped the website, put it on a public URL, and published a tweet that went viral. The tweet included a short video showing how the search function worked — a deliberate tease that hinted at what the tool could do. There was also, he says, "almost a bit of a charitable feeling where folks were like, I want to help other people find the money." That combination of utility and goodwill drove the initial wave. The app eventually grew to a million dollars in annual revenue, run entirely by one person. And then, at its peak, Dawson walked away.

The Build: Speed Over Polish

The app was a crypto portfolio tracker that let users look up wallet addresses and see holdings. Dawson built it during a hackathon with no intention of turning it into a business. The speed was possible because he made sharp tradeoffs: no authentication system, no database, no user accounts. The app pulled public blockchain data and displayed it. That was it. He didn't overthink the architecture or plan for scale. He just solved a narrow problem — people wanted to know what was in a crypto wallet without digging through block explorers — and shipped it.
