The idea is not new. The first paper on sensory substitution appeared in Nature in 1969, when scientist Paul Bach-y-Rita placed blind people in a modified dental chair with a grid of solenoids that poked their backs. A video camera fed the visual scene into this grid, and blind subjects learned to perceive objects in the world through the skin of their backs. Eagleman’s lab has since miniaturized this technology, converting sound into patterns of vibration on the skin so that deaf people can "hear" through touch. This works because the brain treats all sensory input as the same raw material. It does not care about the route—eyes, ears, or fingertips—only about finding meaning in the patterns.
