What Is Intelligence? With David Krakauer

“Making infinite use of finite means.” That phrase, from the 18th-century naturalist Alexander von Humboldt, is how David Krakauer—evolutionary biologist, president of the Santa Fe Institute—distinguishes human language from the signaling systems used by other animals. A vervet monkey’s call for “falcon” is an index: one sound, one meaning, one fixed response. Human language, by contrast, lets you substitute any sound for any thought, string them together with grammar, and generate an unbounded range of meanings. That flexibility, Krakauer argues, is the key to understanding what intelligence is—and what it isn’t.

Intelligence Is Making Hard Problems Easy

Krakauer offers a compact definition: intelligence is “making hard problems easy.” It is not about raw capability or brute-force computation. Every life form, from a bacterium to a human, finds elegant, efficient ways to solve problems in its environment. A bacterium that senses a gradient and swims toward food is intelligent in its context—arguably more intelligent than a human who destroys the world he depends on. Intelligence is a continuum, not a binary. Life itself is binary (you are either alive or dead), but intelligence admits degrees. The theoretical puzzle, Krakauer notes, is how a binary system gives rise to a continuous one.

What you'll learn

  • 1 (05:16) **Intelligence as life’s problem-solving** - Krakauer defines intelligence as “making hard problems easy” and argues it is a continuum present in all life, unlike the binary state of being alive or dead.
  • 2 (06:55) **Collective vs. individual intelligence** - The hosts explore how groups of simple agents can produce smart outcomes, while groups of smart humans can produce mob stupidity.
  • 3 (10:26) **Language as the turning point** - The conversation shifts to whether complex language was the key that unlocked human intelligence, and how it differs from animal signaling.
  • 4 (21:20) **Did language precede or follow intelligence?** - Krakauer clarifies his definition of intelligence and argues that language decouples us from immediate context, enabling both great intelligence and great stupidity.
  • 5 (22:50) **Consciousness vs. intelligence** - Krakauer distinguishes intelligence (problem-solving) from consciousness (being and feeling), and discusses the role of the unconscious mind.
  • 6 (26:52) **Expertise and automaticity** - The discussion uses Chuck’s improvisation and sports performance to show how expertise becomes unconscious, non-linguistic skill.
  • 7 (29:43) **The Kekulé problem and unconscious problem-solving** - Krakauer uses the discovery of the benzene ring to explain how the unconscious mind solves problems visually, not linguistically.

Why did intelligence evolve in the universe? Neil deGrasse Tyson, Chuck Nice, and Gary O’Reilly explore the nature of intelligence, information theory, consciousness, and whether AI is actually intelligent at all with David Krakauer, evolutionary biologist and president of the Santa Fe Institute.
