Fixing the Internet with Jaron Lanier

Jaron Lanier, the computer scientist who coined the term "virtual reality" and now holds the title of Prime Unifying Scientist at Microsoft, has spent decades watching the internet evolve from a promising experiment into what he describes as a behavior-modification machine. In this conversation with Neil deGrasse Tyson, Gary O'Reilly, and Negin Farsad, Lanier argues that the internet's problems are not inevitable—they are the result of specific design choices, business models, and cultural blind spots that can still be corrected.

The VR That Could Have Been

Lanier's original vision for virtual reality had nothing to do with escape. He saw VR as a "palette freshener"—a way to make people appreciate actual reality more vividly. In the 1980s, he would put a flower or a cool mineral in front of someone while they wore a headset, then remove the goggles so they could see the object as if for the first time. "In a way they hadn't seen one before," he says, "because in a way they hadn't."
