Canada Declares Trade War, USPS Ballot Rules Advance, and a Lost Trophy

The United States and Canada are now in a full-blown trade war. Over the weekend, negotiations collapsed after what had seemed like steady progress toward a deal. By Monday morning, the US had imposed 50% tariffs on hundreds of Canadian goods, and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney was using the word "war" to describe the relationship. "You're at war when you get attacked," Carney said. "We got attacked."

The Collapse of US-Canada Trade Talks

The breakdown happened fast. As late as Friday, President Trump had expressed confidence a deal was near. "We had a very good conversation with the Prime Minister last night, and we've come to a deal with Canada," Trump said earlier in the week. But by Friday night, there was no deal, and both sides blamed each other. The US said Canada imposed unacceptable conditions. Canada said the US added last-minute demands that were non-starters.

Carney walked away from White House negotiators, triggering the new tariffs. "We cannot accept what they've offered, and we will not give what they've asked," he said. He went further, declaring the relationship fundamentally changed: "Our relationship with the United States will never again be the same as it was."
