Søren Huss, the Danish singer-songwriter best known as the frontman of the band Saybia, opens the conversation with a simple but loaded admission: he feels unsuitable most of the time. Not in a self-deprecating way, but as a quiet recognition that knowing what you should do and actually doing it are often two different things. “You can be quite sure with your mind that you’re giving up,” he says, “but you’re not doing anything about it.” This gap—between intention and action, between love and the ability to show it—becomes the thread that ties together a story of catastrophic loss, depression, and slow recovery.

The accident and the island of grief

In December 2007, Huss received a phone call that split his life in two. His girlfriend Camilla had been killed in a traffic accident, and his three-year-old daughter Ronja was in surgery for eight hours, her pelvis shattered, lying in an induced coma for 14 days. Huss remembers every detail of that day, but what stands out is how he describes the aftermath: “I had such a picture of me running around on our relationship’s island and being alone. I felt alone on that damn island. Where all our memories, all our hours are together.”
