Morten Bruun

Morten Bruun, the former Danish footballer known as Mr. Silkeborg, has a philosophy of life that runs directly against the prevailing self-help advice of the day. After being fired as head coach of Sønderjyske, he made a deliberate decision: he would never again seek out what lies outside his comfort zone. “I always think that if people treat me well, if I get treated well in a place,” he says, “then I see no reason to challenge the creation by going the other way.” In conversation with host Sørine Godfredsen, Bruun explains how this conviction shapes his relationships, his career, and his understanding of what makes a life feel meaningful.

A childhood of small universes

Bruun grew up at Uldum Højskole, a Danish folk high school where his parents were teachers. The high school was a self-contained world, but one with unusual diversity for rural Denmark in the 1970s — students came from Iran, China, and elsewhere. “It gave me a sense of breath from the big world,” Bruun recalls. This early experience of living inside a close community while sensing something larger beyond it became a template. Football soon became another universe. In Uldum, there was nothing else to do, and Bruun discovered he was good at it.
