AI Summary
5 min readRobinhood’s CEO on letting AI trade your money
Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev started his career in algorithmic trading, and he sees the company's new AI agent feature as the logical endpoint of that path: putting the power of a sophisticated hedge fund into a retail investor's pocket. The product, launched earlier this year, lets users create AI agents that can trade on their behalf. Over 100,000 customers have already onboarded, and Tenev believes a large portion of trading volume will eventually be generated by AI agents — not because humans disappear, but because agents can operate 24/7 across multiple asset classes simultaneously, doing things humans simply cannot do at scale.
From MCP to integrated agents
The first version of Robinhood's agentic trading launched as an MCP (Model Context Protocol) integration, letting users connect external AI tools like Claude to their Robinhood accounts. But Tenev saw two problems. First, most people don't want to use code editors like Claude Code or Codex — it's still a developer tool. Second, the general models themselves were hesitant to trade; they lacked training data on trading traces and weren't built for financial decision-making.

Show Notes
Robinhood wants to put an AI hedge fund in your pocket.
CEO Vlad Tenev tells me how Robinhood Agents brings AI trading into the app, and why he expects agents to generate a growing share of individual investors’ trading activity.
We discuss how much control to give an AI that can trade your money, why Robinhood keeps agents in separate accounts, and where investors will find an edge when everyone has access to powerful models.
He also explains his push for every Robinhood employee to have agents working while they sleep. Tenev argues that the AI backlash is partly an ownership problem: most people can’t invest in the companies driving it. We get into Robinhood’s push to open private markets to everyday investors, the coming AI IPOs, and his response to criticism of tokenized stocks. We also discuss prediction markets and why he objects to AI labs keeping their most powerful tools to themselves.
