From sketch to shelf: How Vizcom is changing product design

Jordan Taylor didn't set out to build a company. He was a car designer who had worked at Honda and Nvidia, and during COVID he trained a rudimentary neural network on his own artwork to see if it could generate car designs. The results were terrible—"literally like a Nintendo Game Boy Advance kind of situation"—but Taylor saw something others didn't. He posted a clunky React app on Reddit, a friend drove out from Michigan to join him, and they lived off Costco hot dogs while building what became Vizcom. Today, hundreds of thousands of designers use the tool, and companies like New Balance, Ford, and Canon rely on it to turn sketches into real products.

The drawing-first philosophy

Vizcom's name comes from "visual communication," and that reveals Taylor's core conviction: the sketch is the starting point, not something to be replaced. "There's something about a drawing that is just so innately irreplaceable," he says. "It's similar to language. We're always gonna be talking or communicating to each other verbally."

Show Notes

Alex and Ellis sit down with Jordan Taylor, founder of Vizcom, to talk about the AI design tool that lets anyone go from a rough sketch to a finished product. They discuss how Jordan built Vizcom out of a viral Reddit post during COVID, why a drawing is still a better creative input than a text prompt, and how hundreds of thousands of designers are already using it to design shoes, cars, and physical products. They also get into the caterpillar shoe that started as a doodle and became a 3D printed product you can actually wear, what the IKEA catalog looks like in 2030, and whether anyone will eventually be able to design and manufacture their own products from scratch.
