“A list of nevers is a fallacy. It’s not a list of things you’ll never do. It’s a list of things you haven’t done yet.” That line, posted by a recovering addict on Reddit, captures the slow-motion catastrophe at the heart of two of the internet’s darkest communities. This episode of Snook descends into Reddit rabbit holes where people are losing control—not to monsters, but to their own brains. One subreddit is full of meth addicts trying to find trustworthy friends; another is full of people terrified by the violent images their own minds produce. Both communities reveal the same unsettling truth: the line between “normal” and “lost” is thinner than most of us want to believe.

The Dopamine Trap

The first rabbit hole starts with a Japanese pharmacologist named Nagayoshi Nagai, who in 1893 isolated ephedrine from the ma huang plant. He was trying to treat asthma. Instead, he eventually created methamphetamine—a drug that releases roughly 1,300 units of dopamine in the brain. For comparison, a normal baseline is about 100 units; great food or sex gets you to 200. No substance on earth produces a bigger dopamine hit. That chemical fact is the engine behind an epidemic that has killed hundreds of thousands of people and currently fuels use among about 33% of the homeless population in the U.S.
