Terrifying Bodycam Footage

In June 2023, New York State Trooper Richard Albert pulled over a car speeding at over 100 miles per hour on I-88. The driver, Nelson Trochet, fired through the window without warning, striking Albert in the shoulder inches from his heart. The wounded officer returned fire. A passing pickup truck slammed its brakes to avoid the gunfight, and a log truck plowed into it from behind. Trochet and his girlfriend fled on foot after their hijacked getaway vehicle stalled. For over an hour, law enforcement searched the woods. Trochet was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The girlfriend's fate was not released.

A Routine Call That Turned Deadly

On February 11, 2024, in Las Cruces, New Mexico, Officer Jonah Hernandez responded to a trespassing complaint. The property owner had been dealing with squatters who were vandalizing the property, starting fires, and leaving needles. The suspect, Armando Silva, had been warned to leave the day before. Body camera footage shows Hernandez walking up to Silva and asking, "What's going on? What's up? Is this your place?" Without warning, Silva pulled a knife and charged. Hernandez begged for mercy but was stabbed multiple times. A witness named Isaiah Astorga fired four rounds at the attacker and ran to help Hernandez. Both Hernandez and Silva died at the scene.

A Dog Shooting and a Question of Overreaction
