The Automation Trap: Why Daron Acemoglu Thinks AI's Biggest Opportunities Are Being Overlooked

When MIT economist and 2024 Nobel laureate Daron Acemoglu looks at the AI industry, he sees a dangerous imbalance. "The only thing we do is automation," he says. "That will eliminate too many jobs without creating meaningful, high-paying, high productivity jobs to create new opportunities for people." The problem, in his view, isn't that AI is overhyped—it's that Silicon Valley is pouring resources into the wrong things.

The Productivity Gap Nobody's Talking About

Acemoglu's 2024 estimate that AI would add roughly 1% to US GDP over the next decade, with only 5% of tasks being fully automatable, has drawn criticism from AI optimists. Two years later, he acknowledges that agentic AI and rapid advances in coding have made him revise that number upward—but only slightly. "Automation is hard," he insists. "Integrating automation into organizations is hard. Diffusion of new technologies, especially when they require lots of complementary investments and adjustments, is hard and slow."

Show Notes

Daron Acemoglu is an MIT economist and a 2024 Nobel laureate in Economic Sciences. He believes some of AI’s biggest business opportunities are being overlooked—but where does he see the real money, and what should you learn to stay valuable?

In this episode, I ask Daron where founders should look for opportunities beyond the AI hype. We talk about why helping workers become more productive can be better for business than replacing them, why existing models are already powerful enough to build useful applications, and where high-quality data creates an advantage. Daron also shares what he would study now and why builders need to spend more time talking to workers.
