On the morning of September 11, 2001, a woman out for a run in Lower Manhattan saw a passenger jet fly low along the Hudson River, its nose tilted down, before it punched into the North Tower of the World Trade Center at 466 miles per hour. She watched black smoke unfurl and what looked like white confetti swirl on the wind—paperwork blown from broken office windows. When a second plane hit the South Tower seventeen minutes later, she understood: this was no accident. America was under attack.

The plot and its planners

The attacks were the work of Al-Qaeda, the Islamist militant organization led by Osama bin Laden, the son of a wealthy Saudi businessman. Bin Laden had been radicalized during the 1980s, when thousands of Islamist fighters traveled to Afghanistan to oppose the Soviet invasion. After the Soviets withdrew in 1989, bin Laden and his followers were galvanized: if they could defeat one superpower, why not another? Al-Qaeda promoted the narrative that determined militants could defeat even the United States. Bin Laden argued that local insurgencies were doomed unless they removed the Western powers that supported their governments. He identified the United States as "the head of the snake."

Show Notes

On the morning of September 11th, 2001, terrorists from the Islamic extremist group Al Qaeda hijacked four commercial aircraft in a coordinated attack against targets in the United States. Two planes were intentionally crashed in New York City. A third hit the government’s military and defence headquarters at the Pentagon. The fourth jet plummeted into a field when passengers fought back against hijackers and prevented it from reaching a target in Washington. The atrocity, which became widely known as 9/11, saw almost 3,000 people from 93 different countries lose their lives.

Why did Al Qaeda target the United States? How did they devise a plan to use aircraft as weapons? And why did it take almost a decade to hunt down the terrorist mastermind, Osama bin Laden?
