Episode 1: Into the Slop

One night this past spring, Evan Ratliff overheard a voice coming from another room in his house. It was a familiar voice—Megan Flores, the AI agent he had created back in 2025 to run sales and marketing for his startup, Harumo AI. Except Megan wasn't supposed to be there. She was reading a Groupon ad. Ratliff had built Megan's voice from an online library at Eleven Labs, attached it to a large language model, and staffed a whole company with AI agents. The company didn't work out, but Megan's voice had taken on a life of its own. Soon listeners from his podcast Shell Game started sending him clips: Megan as a skincare spokesperson, Megan as "Haley" at Hertz car rental, Megan as "Maya Brooks" hosting a book podcast, Megan as "Hope" on a law of attraction show. A friend called Randy's Heating and Cooling in Bremerton and heard Megan on the hold music. Ratliff called too. He couldn't be sure. Was it her? A doppelganger? Who was Megan? Who wasn't Megan?

Show Notes

Evan creates his own AI-generated podcast detector, locates thousands of AI-hosted shows, and sets off on a synthetic audio listening binge. Strange patterns begin to arise amidst the voices, illuminating the essence of AI slop. The Shell Game band gets back together to put Evan's findings to the test, and see whether it’s possible to build an AI-generated podcast that a listener would actually find meaningful.
