AI Summary
5 min readAfter two decades of hosting a sex advice podcast, Dr. Emily Morse has realized that most of the questions she gets are not really about sex. People ask about the best position, how to give better oral, or whether they are normal, but underneath those questions lie layers of shame, rejection, resentment, and confidence issues. The techniques still matter — positions, toys, lube — but they only work when built on a stronger foundation. That foundation, she argues, is what she calls sexual intelligence, or "sex IQ," a framework she developed for her book Smart Sex. The best lovers are not the ones with the biggest toy collection or the most moves; they are the ones who know themselves, can regulate their emotions, stay present, and create a space where their partner feels safe enough to actually enjoy the sex they are having.

What you'll learn
- 1 (01:38) **Why 20 Years of Advice Changed** - Dr. Emily Moriarty introduces the core thesis: after two decades, she believes better sex comes from mastering yourself, not just mastering techniques.
- 2 (03:08) **The Surface Question vs. The Real Problem** - Listeners ask about "best positions" but are really asking about body changes after childbirth, fear of not being attractive, or feeling disconnected from their own body.
- 3 (05:57) **The "Anal Sex Girl" Cringe** - A party encounter made Dr. Moriarty realize she had been reduced to a "tips and tricks" sex expert, which now feels incomplete.
- 4 (06:42) **Why "Just Communicate" Is Not Enough** - Early advice to "just talk to your partner" oversimplified a deeply difficult skill.
- 5 (08:05) **"Spice It Up" Won't Fix Resentment** - The common advice to buy new lingerie or toys ignores the real issues of emotional disconnection and rejection.
- 6 (08:57) **Schedule Sex vs. Schedule Connection** - Scheduling sex can feel like a performance review and a chore, especially when sex has been painful or unenjoyable.
- 7 (09:47) **Responsive Desire: The Key to Not Feeling Broken** - Most people measure their libido against spontaneous desire (feeling struck by arousal out of nowhere), but that model is wrong for long-term relationships.

Show Notes
For 20 years, people have asked me the same questions: what's the best position, how do I get better oral sex, is anal sex supposed to hurt. And honestly? I still love answering those. But after two decades of doing this podcast, I've realized something. People rarely come to me with the real problem. Underneath the sex question, there's almost always shame, rejection, resentment, or the big one: "am I normal?"
In this episode, I'm doing something I've never done before going back through 20 years of advice and telling you what I'd change. I'm a Doctor of Human Sexuality and I've talked to millions of people about their sex lives, and here's what I know now that I didn't then: "just communicate" isn't enough, "spice it up" doesn't fix resentment, spontaneous desire is mostly a myth for people in long-term relationships, and sleep and stress matter more than any toy in your nightstand. I'm breaking down the five pillars of sexual intelligence, why I think we're all obsessed with the wrong metrics, and what actually predicts great sex (hint: it's not technique). If you've ever wondered whether you're normal, this one's for you. You are.
